People hear the sound of a lock clicking behind them and feel a tremendous sense of embarrassment when it comes to being caught without their keys. They feel incompetent and are often far too hard on themselves, despite their situation being a very common one throughout the UK, and indeed the world.
According to a feature on the Newcastle Herald, one in four people surveyed as part of a study on household emergencies had previously locked themselves out of their homes, and children were far more likely to slip up in this area than adults, as you may expect. In fact, even in cases where the locked out party was an adult, more than 30% of the surveyed individuals blamed their children for the accident in some way, shape or form.

However, the study also showed some surprising results too. For example, one in five people waited a puzzling 12 hours for assistance with their household emergency, and more than 10% also made their predicament much worse by trying to solve their problem single handed. Unless you’re properly trained, there’s no point risking a DIY solution, as you may well make things worse, and there’s certainly no need to wait for hours before you pick up the phone either.
Whilst you might feel embarrassed, you’re certainly not on your own, and your dilemma can’t be more awkward than the case of a police officer earlier this month, who managed to lock his keys inside his own car when arresting a suspect. The Express relates how the officer had to recruit the suspect’s mother to drive them both to the station, and was subsequently greeted as a ‘laughing stock’ by his colleagues.
Clearly, anyone can find themselves caught out when it comes to getting locked out of their home or vehicle, and there’s no need to feel that you’re inept should you have done so.
